Monique Lhuillier kicks off Fashion Week El Paseo

  • Known for her dreamy and elegant wedding gowns and sophisticated ready-to-wear looks, Monique Lhuillier will kick off Fashion Week El Paseo on Saturday.

The Los Angeles-based designer will showcase her fall look on the runway, which she describes as "an artistic expression of an eccentric woman who is cool, relaxed, and rock ‘n’ roll, and takes cues from style icon Talitha Getty."

As her looks sashay down the runway, guests will be treated to tailored separates in a vivid color palette of cherry, teal blue, rose pink and basil contrasted by caramel and dark amber tones.

Her evening looks will feature column skirts with lacquer embroidery and floaty dresses in varying sleeve lengths. Leather belt accessories helps evoke a rocker-chic edge that still maintains femininity.

Models will wear high-heeled ornate floral caged sandals that make a statement when worn with crystal socks.

She also plans to debut her sunglass collection on the runway.

The Desert Sun caught up with the designer via email and asked a series of questions in anticipation of her show.

What is your inspiration for your designs? What drives you and how would you describe your aesthetic?

I am often inspired by my travels and by art and architecture, and this can be seen in the selection of fabrics, prints and color palette. I start with an inspiration and design the collection around it. I would describe my design aesthetic as sophisticated luxury, feminine and glamorous with a modern twist. I design accessories with my inspiration in mind as I want the collections to be cohesive. The key is to be constantly inspired and surrounded by an amazing team that understands your vision.

You started with wedding dresses, then branched out with ready-to-wear and now you have fine jewelry, lifestyle products, jewelry and footwear. What is next for your brand?

I love to challenge myself by expanding into new design categories. I recently launched my first children’s home and accessories collection with Pottery Barn Kids. My eyewear capsule collection is also launching this fall and have a few new categories in the works.

You have an impressive list of celebrity clients like Michelle Obama, Emma Stone, Reese Witherspoon and Taylor Swift. Who else would you like to see wearing one of your looks?

I would love to dress Rihanna. She has such an amazing sense of style and wears clothes with so much confidence. I would love to see her interpretation of one of my designs.

How would you describe your own personal style? What is your go-to item in your wardrobe?

For me, it is all about the ease of dressing. Having two young kids I am always on the go. I need pieces that have an effortless sense of style and sophistication yet still have something quite feminine and luxurious about them. If I am wearing a more feminine dress, I will balance the look with an edgier, more masculine shoe. I also love a romper or jumpsuit, one piece dressing is easy for the summer and adds a bit of playfulness to my look.

What can you not live without and why?

A pencil skirt is the piece that I couldn’t live without. It is so versatile and extremely flattering. It creates an ensemble that exemplifies understated elegance. I always include them in my collections in luxurious fabrics, my favorite is a lace midi pencil skirt -- it goes with everything.

What are some key trends for spring and summer?

My spring collection is all about bold, vibrant colors and experiments with new silhouettes. Color is a great way to make a statement, whether it is with your clothes or accessories. A tea-length dress is the perfect way to show off bold shoes.

I also designed great pant and top looks for evening. These looks remain formal, but bring an edginess and fresh take to evening wear.
